BEAUMALRIC Print E-mail

Nearly two miles east of the town of Gigondas, across the Montmirail Mountains, begins the small appellation of Beaumes-de-Venise. The family of Daniel Begouassel began here nearly three generations ago as growers and vine plant experts, or pepinierists. Over the years, the Begouassel family has been responsible for planting many of the estates in and around the village of Beaumes-de-Venise, and planted their own six hectares of Muscat from the best selections of Muscat Petits Grains. The winemaking style of Daniel Begouassel is modern and forward-thinking. His Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise always exhibits more freshness and elegance than others made in the region. The very small quantities made at Domaine de Beaumalric make it easier to control the winemaking process at a consistently high level. The wine is made by arresting the fermentation process before all of the natural sugars of the Muscat grapes have been consumed. This is done by adding a small amount of neutral spirits, much in the same way a vintage port is made.

"This is one of the up and coming stars of Beaumes de Venise. Proprietor Daniel Begouaussel broke away from the appellation's cooperative in 1991 and began to estate bottle his wine. By keeping his yields low and utilizing 100% Muscat a Petits Grains, Begouaussel has fashioned some of the most elegant, refreshing, lighter styled, but authoritatively flavored sweet wines of Beaumes de Venise." Robert Parker
