Long
before most Port shippers owned any vineyards, Dow?s purchased Quinta
do Zimbro in 1887, Senhora da Ribiera in 1890 and Bomfim in 1896.
Dow?s pioneered the era of modern wine making in the Douro. The Bomfim
winery was built in 1964 and was one of the first in the region to have
total temperature control. At Senhora da Ribiera, Dow?s continues to
make all the Quinta?s wine by traditional foot treading in large
granite lagares (square open tanks that are about 12 feet wide and
about 3 feet deep). Dow?s wineries receive more A and B quality (the
finest classifications) than any other wineries in the Douro and Dow?s
is the largest buyer of premium grapes in the Douro. This unique
position is a key factor in the outstanding quality of Dow?s Ports. The
style of Dow?s Ports is more structured and less sweet than most other
leading Port houses. This classic dryness is the hallmark of Dow?s and
particularly with Vintage Port, shows outstanding style with maturity.

Vintage
Vintage Port is the outstanding wine of an outstanding year.
Perhaps on average only three times in a decade is the weather suitable
for the declaration of a Vintage year and only a small handful of
vineyards in the Alto Douro produce wines of the potential to become
Vintage Port. Professor Sainsbury in his famous Notes on a Cellar Book wrote: ?There is no shipper?s wine that I have found better than the best of Dow 1878 and 1890 especially.?
1963 $299.99 very limited

through 2008." 91 The Wine Spectator 12/31/99
1983 $65.99 very limited

1985 $74.99 very limited
"An attractive 1985 that's starting to show well, with aromas of
cherry, spice and nut. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long,
sweet aftertaste.--Dow vertical. Best from 2001 through 2010." The Wine Spectator 12/31/99
1994 $99.99 limited
"The massive 1994 is unquestionably the finest Dow I have tasted since
the 1977. This opaque purple-colored wine is not as developed or
flamboyant as Fonseca, but it is super-concentrated and multi-layered,
with huge masses of fruit and some tannin in the finish. This is a
slightly drier style than Fonseca or Graham's, but it appears to be a
classic, majestic, enormously constituted 1994 that should age
effortlessly for three decades or more. It is one of the stars of the
vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030." 96 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #107
1997 $61.99-750ml limited $29.99-375ml limited
"Super. I love the nose of this young Port, which shows raisin, spice
and a little stemminess. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with loads of ripe
tannins and a long, long finish. Really racy and exciting. Even better
than when tasted from barrel. Best after 2006." 95 The Wine Spectator 1/29/00
2000 $59.99
Quinta do Bomfim
This
quinta classified ?A? grade, forms the core of Dow?s famed Vintage
Ports. In ?non-declared? years, the quinta produces wines of
consistently high quality, which are selected and bottled as Dow?s
Quinta do Bomfim. These wines are treated in all respects as Vintage
Port and therefore should be stored lying down and decanted before
serving. Quinta do Bomfim wines are normally ready to drink from about
its tenth year but will also benefit by keeping for many more years.
1995 $35.99 available
"Slightly heavy but impressively concentrated, this is a very ripe
young Port with plum, raisin and spice aromas and flavors. Full-bodied,
very sweet, with sugar-coated, thick tannins. Best after 2004." 90 The Wine Spectator 4/30/98
"Saturated deep ruby. Aromas of cassis, blackstrap molasses and sassafras. Smooth, stylish and intensely flavored; in the classic crisp, drier Dow style. But very stylish port, finishing long, firm and minerally. 90 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-98
Quinta da Senhora da Ribiera
Quinta
da Senhora da Ribiera takes its name from the little chapel between the
Quinta house and the river, and was originally acquired by Dow's in
1890. The vineyard consists almost entirely of steep walled terraces,
some of which are amongst the earliest to be built in the Douro. The
vineyard covers 21 hectares of south-facing hillside with 62,000 vines.
The average age of these is over 25 years, and typically each vine
yields only three-quarters of a kilo of grapes. This low yield,
combined with the hot dry climate, consistently produces wines of
tremendous depth of color and complexity, distinguished by their
violets and Esteva aromas and tannic structure.
1998 $49.99 very limited
"A
knockout? It grows into a gentle giant, with the potency of oregano, as
though of Esteva on steroids, hard to get all of it in the mouth or the
brain at once. The wine is gripping, both voluptuous and tight, tasting
like an old field blend of the varied Douro vines, wild as crushed
berries and herbs. Cellar it to see what it may become perhaps the wine
of the vintage." 94 Wine and Spirits Magazine 4/02
2001 $52.99
Rare Tawny
Peter
and Charles Symington select young wines of great style and body for
setting aside and maturing in oak, over many years. During the ageing,
the Ports gradually lose the full, deep red color of their youth and
take on the classic amber hue, which gives them their name.
10 year $29.99 available
"Bright and beautiful honey, toffee, caramel and a touch of nuts. A
vibrant, sweet Port of lovely, delicate structure. Can't put it down." The Wine Spectator 1/31/96
20 year $48.99 limited
"Complex
aromas of toffee, roasted nuts, lead pencil, orange peel and caraway
seed. Intensely flavored fruit is silky but nicely delineated; offers a
fresh flavor of orange peel. Not at all thick, but brisk and vibrant.
Finishes clean and long, with hints of smoked nuts and marzipan." 90 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-98
30 year $94.99 limited
"Plenty of caramel, toffee and coffee aromas and flavors. Medium- to
full-bodied, very sweet, smooth, succulent finish. Mellow tawny." The Wine Spectator 1/31/96
LBV
These
wines come from the same vineyards that, in a year when a Vintage is
"declared", produce Vintage Port. However, as they are bottled between
the fourth and sixth year after the harvest, they mature more quickly
and are ready to drink much sooner. Dow?s LBV is a full rich Port with
spicy ripe fruit flavors and an elegant aromatic nose. Well rounded on
the palate and has the traditional Dow?s drier finish which makes it
one of the finest LBV Ports available.
1997 $20.99
