PARINGA Alan Robb Hickinbotham became a founder of the Australian wine industry by establishing the Oenology course at the Roseworthy Agricultural College during the Depression. The school has continued to lead the rest of the world in the research and development of modern winemaking technology and the Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory was named in his honor. While one side of the family was pursuing winemaking as a vocation, the other was involved in the construction business. This gave David Higginbotham enough capital to purchase 300 acres of prime vineyard land in McLaren Vale early in the 70?s. Without money or technology for irrigation, the vines were dry grown. This produced grapes of intense flavor that captured the distinctive character of McLaren Vale fruit. In 1976 they made the wine themselves, with the unwooded wine (predating the unoaked wines of the late 90?s by some 20 years) won four gold medals at the Australian National Wine Show. Over the years the quality of the grapes has enabled David to sell to smaller producers with high profiles in the fine wine world such as Clarendon Hills. Penfolds have used the Clarendon fruit in several vintages of Grange as well. David now has a Cabernet Sauvignon released under his own Clarendon label. "This value priced operation is owned by David Hickinbotham, a name more associated with the top vineyard he owns from which some dazzling wines are produced by Clarendon Hills. His Paringa estate is designed to produce fruity, authentically varietal reds that sell for a song." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate " Robert Parker
