RED EDGE

The Red Edge vineyard at Heathcote in Central Victoria was purchased by Peter and Judy Dredge in 1994. It is planted to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and is situated south-west of Heathcote on the ridge of Cambrian red volcanic soil which runs parallel to the Northern Highway through Heathcote and towards Mount Carmel. The vineyard was planted in 1971 and named ?Red Hill? by Vern Viertman. In 1980 it was purchased by Laurie Williams and John Flynn who produced the highly acclaimed 1981 and 1982 vintages of Flynn and Williams Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines come from a single vineyard of mature vines; they are un-irrigated and planted in ancient Cambrian red volcanic soil. The yield in 2001 was around one ton per acre. Organic viticulture is fundamentally employed using natural fertilizers and elemental fungicides, the only exception being the use of synthetic herbicide in winter.

"Produced from a dry farmed vineyard planted in Cambrian red volcanic soil, these are well made, structured, beautifully fruited reds that promise to age nicely for a decade or more. They are brought up in both new and old French oak for 12 months and are bottled with neither fining nor filtration." Robert parker, The Wine Advocate
