Domenico Scarpantoni Print E-mail

Domenico Scarpantoni is the patriarch of the family. He left Abruzzi and found his way to McLaren Vale around 1952. He was hired at Hardy?s Tintara winery and he began saving money to buy vineyards. Over the years he purchased some great old vine vineyards and in the 1960s began making wine under his own label. Sons Michael and Filipo grew up with the winery and have since taken over the day-to-day operation. It?s difficult to think of another producer who offers such enjoyable wines at such reasonable prices. Despite their old world heritage, the sons have a new world outlook on wine and this has been particularly evident in their past few vintages.

School Block
2001 $16.99 limited
"This offering possesses a certain rusticity revealing an unexpected Amarone-like character that gives it considerable personality. An excellent value, the 2001 School Block (60% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot) offers a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a big nose of ground pepper interwoven with meaty, earthy, mushroomy scents. Dense, sweet, and ripe, with loads of fruit and body as well as a soft finish, this gutsy red could pass for a wine from southern Italy. Enjoy it over the next 3-5 years." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #148
