From his beginnings at Orlando in 1972, Geoff progressed to the position of white winemaker for Thomas Hardy and Sons in 1975. In 1988 Geoff was appointed chief winemaker for the Hardy group of companies overseeing winemaking of around 10% of Australia?s grapes. Recognizing that the future of Australian winemaking depended on the quality of the fruit grown in the vineyard Geoff with his wife Judith, embarked on a project to grow the best possible fruit in a new state of the art vineyard at Lenswood. They planted the vineyard at Lenswood in 1982 and have steadily developed it to its current 11 hectares. Lenswood is a tiny sub-region within the Adelaide Hills whose climate fits somewhere between Alsace and Auckland; cool enough to nurture intense, fine flavors, yet sufficiently warm to allow the full ripening of most varieties. Its soils are ancient, well-drained and relatively unfertile gray clay loams and deep red clay loams, with fairly steep slopes between 20-40%. It was in 1992 that Geoff made the break from corporate winemaking and left to pursue his winemaking dreams at Lenswood full time. In doing so his responsibility went from 120,000 tons of fruit at Hardy?s to 70 tons from Lenswood. Numerous awards for the wines demonstrate the outstanding qualities of this vineyard. The most recent award, The Hyatt/Advertiser 1998 Wine of the Year, was for the 1996 Chardonnay, awarded not only for the best Chardonnay, but for the best wine entered from all classes. This is the first time a white wine has ever won this award.
