GREENOCK CREEK Established in 1978, Greenock Creek is a tiny Barossa winery with a production level of only 2500 cases per year, owned by Michael and Annabel Waugh. These wines, fashioned from old, low-yielding vineyards, have accumulated quite a reputation. Greenock Creek Wines is situated at Seppeltsfield in the rolling hills between the hamlets of Greenock and Marananga, on the western edge of the Barossa Valley. The winery's first release was in 1988. The range of wines includes five Shiraz, two Cabernet Sauvignons and a Grenache, all processed at the winery on the Waugh?s Roennfeldt Road property. ?I was absolutely astounded by the quality of these wines, particularly the Grenache and two Shiraz cuv?es. Owned by Annabelle and Michael Waugh, this winery, along with consultant winemaker Chris Ringland, is according to Dan Philips, one of the most amazing in Australia. Certainly one taste of these wines will make a believer out of anybody. Sadly, much of the production is already sold in Australia. All four of these cuv?e?s were made from yields of less than 1.75 tons of fruit per acre. Although alcohol levels are as high as 15% for the Grenache, they are not discernable given the wines? extraordinary wealth of fruit and intensity. The Greenock Creek vineyards are all situated in the northern Barossa Valley, the same are in which some of the finest sources for Penfold?s Grange are located. These are massive, opulently textured, extraordinary wines. I kept the 1995 Seven Acres Shiraz open for a whopping five days without a trace of oxidation. I finally asked myself what in the world I was doing, and drank the rest of the bottle.? Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #117
