2006 Bordeaux Futures "A surprisingly good year for the finest terriors... some 2006's are even more complete than their 2005 counterparts" - Robert Parker "In 2006 many Chateaux produced very good to outstanding wines... a few even made wines of potentially classic quality" - James Suckling While most of the talk about '06 Bordeaux centers around the rain-bedeviled harvest and challenging weather conditions, the real discussion should be about the market for the 2006 and the opportunities it presents. It's no secret that most of the wine produced in '06 ranges from disappointing to modestly successful in quality, but is essential to understand that a handful of Chateaux were able to produce great wine - not good, but great. As we've noted in the past, a rising or ebbing tide has the same effect on all boats. Chateau owners who have produced '06's equal to (or in some cases superior to) their spectacular '05's still have to sell their wines to a somewhat disinterested market at prices that will attract buyers. Keen purchasers should easily recognize the value in a 93 or 94 point '06 at a price 20 plus % lower than '05. The 2006 vintage will be one of our smallest and most stringently selected offerings in the last quarter century, but every wine in this offer marries exceptional quality with superb value. With top Napa Cabernet selling for $125 to $300 a bottle, the likes of Pontet Canet ($70). Calon Ségur ($58), Léoville Barton ($64) or Haut Bages Liberal ($33) should have the wine lover's salivating in anticipation. One final note - production in 2006 was severely reduced at these top estates. A naturally low crop size coupled with crop-thinning and very rigid selection practices have reduced the quantity of wine available at these properties by as much as 1/3! So even though this '06 futures offer will be one of out most attractive it will also be one of our smallest - we will undoubtedly sell out of many of these selections, please act quickly.
