Snowden

“The following notes confirm what I wrote last year about this somewhat under-the-radar winery. Snowden produces just under 2,000 cases of extraordinary wine from their 23 acres of hillside vineyards on the eastern side of Napa, above the Auberge du Soleil. Proprietor Scott Snowden and his daughter, Diane (whose permanent home is Domaine Dujac, with husband Jeremy Seysses), along with consultant David Ramey have fashioned superb reds along with a delicious, French-inspired Sauvignon Blanc. For Napa Cabernets, Snowden’s wines are relatively great bargains for their quality.” Robert Parker

Zind-Humbrecht

"I don't know what is more mind-boggling, the quality of Domaine Zind Humbrecht's wines or Olivier Humbrecht's complete dedication to quality. This tall, powerful, and intellectual man may well be the finest winemaker in the world." Robert Parker

Collazzi

Villa Collazzi is one of the most impressive estates in all of Tuscany. This architectural landmark was originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560. Of the estate’s 960 acres just under 50 are currently planted to vines. Well draining and low in organic matter, they offer the perfect habitat for grapes. The property is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The wines are aged primarily in new French oak barrels. The estate produces a Chianti Classico called I Bastioni and a Super-Tuscan blend called Collazzi

The Sorting Table represents a hand-selected portfolio of world-famous, terroir-driven estates. Each of the wineries owns or manages its vineyards, controls every step of the winemaking process and is considered an archetype or benchmark for its region. The list of wineries represented by The Sorting Table reads like a Who’s Who of the winemaking world – Dujac, Henri Boillot, Zind Humbrecht, Snowden, Seresin, Hyde de Villaine, Aldo Conterno and Castello di Ama.

Wines to be Tasted:

Zind-Humbrecht Riesling 08 (92ws)

“A well-cut Riesling, offering a salty mineral note and laserlike acidity that defines the quince, yellow peach and floral notes. This packs a lot of flavor into an elegant and light-weight package. Drink now through 2022.”

Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris 08 (92ws)

“There's a nice salty minerality to this white, with crackling acidity supporting the white peach, quince and kumquat flavors. This has fine intensity and length, with a vibrancy that enlivens the wine and a long, smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2020.”

Zind Humbrecht Pinot d’Alsace 07

The analytically bone-dry Zind-Humbrecht 2007 Pinot d’Alsace (two-thirds Auxerrois and 2-3% Pinot Noir) smells of fresh peach, orange, hazelnut, and a hint of mushroom. Subtly creamy yet refreshing – its low ripeness and sheer extract (notwithstanding levity) lending a faint suggestion of sweetness – it finishes with hints of chalk and iodine.” Robert Parker

Collazzi Toscano Collazzi 05 (92ws)

Rich and full-bodied, with lots of currant, tobacco and vanilla on the nose. Soft and silky, with fruit-coated tannins and a long, fruity finish. Caresses the palate with fruit and licorice flavors. So drinkable, even now. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.”

Collazzi Chianti Classico I Bastioni 05

I Bastioni combines the elegance and pleasantness of Sangiovese, its main grape varietal, with the roundness and power that small amount of Merlot give to the wine. Made with wine making techniques similar to Collazzi, I Bastioni has a convincingly unique personality: juicy, ripe tannins give complexity and character to this wine, matured in small oak casks for over 12 months.

Collazzi Toscana Liberta 08

Fresh and fruity, with clean black cherry, berry and chocolate character. This is slightly loose-knit on the medium palate, but the lingering fresh fruit keeps the interest up. Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese.” The Wine Spectator
