Established by Polish immigrant Stanislaus Serafin in 1947, this domaine is considered one of the finest growers in the village of Gevrey. Second generation owner Christian Serafin has been making the wines for over 20 years by following a philosophy of old vines and low yields. The wines are fermented at fairly high temperatures ensuring good extraction of color and fruit. The wines are bottled unfiltered with good levels of new oak. These wines are rich, concentrated and structured, ageing gracefully for many years..

Chambolle Musigny les Bauds
1998 $56.99 very limited
""Very good deep red-ruby. Briary raspberry, herbs and mocha on the nose. Supple and concentrated; large-scaled and expansive for a Chambolle wine. No rough edges. Finishes with sweet but firm toothcoating tannins and excellent length of flavor. The best vintage yet of this release chez Serafin.
" 89-92 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-00

Gevrey Chambertin Corbeaux
1997 $69.99 very limited
1998 $56.99 limited
1999 $57.99 limited
"Dark cherries and Asian spices can be found in the nose of the 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Corbeaux. Medium-bodied and powerful, this wine has superb depth of fruit, displaying freshly laid road tar, blackberries, licorice, and cherries. It reveals loads of beautifully ripened tannin in its long finish." 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #136

Gevrey Chambertin Cazatieres
1998
$74.99 very limited
"Red-ruby. Highly aromatic nose of red cherry, licorice and sappy spices; a bit less animal than usual for this wine. Highly concentrated and thick with extract; offers impressive sweetness and layered texture. Finishes with very persistent red fruit flavors and rather suave, broad tannins. 91
Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-01
2000 $78.99 very limited
"Bright ruby-red. Aromas of plum, blackberry, smoke and earth. Intensely flavored and sweet, with very intense, sharply delineated flavors of black cherry, dark berries and game. Finishes long and juicy, with lovely fine tannins. The densest to this point of these 2000s. A very classy Gevrey premier cru." 90(+?)

Gevrey Chambertin Fontenoy
1992 $41.99 very limited
"The 1992 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Fonteny is richer than the 1992 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, with more length and sweetness, as well as fine structure. Made from a vineyard abutting two of the village's grand crus, Mazis-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin, this spicy wine displays excellent ripeness and concentration, medium body, and a sweet, forward, moderately tannic finish. It should be at its best in 1-2 years and last for up to 12. In a village of far too many underachievers, Christian Serafin stands out as one of the sure-handed winemakers. His wines have been remarkably consistent since I first visited him nearly a decade ago." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #96
1993 $52.99 very limited
"More powerful and sweeter than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, Gevrey-Chambertin Le Fonteny exhibits medium body, layers of ripe fruit, firm tannin, and a spicy, structured finish. It needs 3-5 years of cellaring given its more noticeable tannin; it should keep for 15 years. Serafin's 1993s were made from yields averaging 32 hectoliters per hectare, or just over 2 tons per acre. All were bottled without fining or filtration. They are pure, rich, well-structured wines with good balance." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #100
1995 $59.99 very limited
"Generally one of the best values to be found in premier cru red Burgundies is the 1995 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Fonteny. Displaying a dark ruby color and a fresh, spice-laden candied nose, this velvety-textured beauty is packed with pure and fabulous sweet/sour and wild cherry and berry flavors. Long on the finish, and well structured, this wine should be drunk between 2001-2008." 89-91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #111
1997 $63.99 very limited
"Saturated ruby-colored, the 1997 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Fonteny reveals sweet red currant and cherry aromas. It is medium-bodied, elegant, yet hugely fruit wine packed with red and black cherries as well as Asian spices. Anticipated maturity: now-2005. The highly talented and straight-shooting Christian Serafin described 1997 as a modern-day 1989." 89-91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #125
1998 $62.99 limited
"Red-ruby. Deeper-pitched, slightly floral aromas of black raspberry, game, licorice and sweet oak. Fat, sweet and generous; pliant and elegant, with lovely flesh over firm backbone. Lovely balance. Like a smaller version of Serafin Charmes-Chambertin, as opposed to his more powerful
Cazatieres. Rather oaky on the lingering finish. 89-91 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-00

Morey St Denis Millandes
1996
$55.99 very limited
"Similar red-ruby color to the above. Aromatic, briary, slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry and licorice. Fuller, denser and sweeter than the above, but the wine's thickness is leavened by a hint of medicinal austerity. Flavors of black fruits. Finishes with dusty, ripe, well-buffered tannins.
" 90 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-99
1997 $57.99 limited
"The medium to dark ruby-colored 1997 Morey-St.-Denis Les Millandes (29 year old vines) exhibits sweet candied fruit scents intermingled with rosemary and thyme. It is medium-bodied, well-ripened, and refined. It is not as lush or persistent as the Baudes but offers beautiful delineation as well as a delightfully spicy character. Anticipated maturity: now-2005." 88-91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #125
1998 $56.99 very limited
"Deep ruby-red. Perfumed, darker aromas of black raspberry, mocha, menthol and meat. At once more powerful and cooler in the mouth; tightly wrapped, fresh and firmly tannic. "Like a smaller-scaled Clos de la Roche," notes Serafin.
" 89-91 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-00
1999 $57.99 very limited
"The dark-colored 1999 Morey-St.-Denis Les Millandes bursts from the glass with plummy dark fruit aromas, yet has a firmly structured, masculine, foursquare personality. Freshly laid road tar, blackberries, and currants can be found in this powerful wine, yet its aggressive tannin restrains the wine's copious fruit. It is excellent, and will provide delicious drinking between 2005 and 2009." 90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #136
2000 $58.99 very limited
"Red-ruby. Aromas of blueberry, currant, mocha and minerals. Quite primary and youthfully backward, with tightly wound, strong dark berry flavors. Finishes long and subtle, and less dry than it appeared a year ago from barrel."
Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-03

Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
1994 $29.99 very limited
1997 $52.99 limited
1998 $52.99 limited
"Good full ruby-red. Roasted red fruits, leather and game on the nose. Fat and lush in the mouth, with fruit-driven flavors of cherry, redcurrant, iron and mocha. Boasts impressive texture for a '98 village wine. The substantial tannins avoid dryness.
" Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-01
1999 $52.99 limited
"The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes reveals sweet black cherry aromas. This is a medium-bodied, plush, dark fruit-filled wine. It is rich, beautifully ripe, plump, and immensely appealing. Drink it over the course of the next 5-6 years." 91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #136

Gevrey Chambertin
1995 $41.99 limited
"Clean and pure, exhibiting aromas and flavors of blackberry, plum and spicy oak. Elegant for the appellation, yet full of sweet sappy fruit, all wrapped up in firm tannins and bright acidity. Try in 2000.
" 90 The Wine Spectator1/15/97
1996 $78.99 very limited
"Good deep red. Black cherry, licorice and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Sweet, firm and expressive, with dark berry, cherry and licorice flavors. Boasts firm acids and tannins, and solid structure for a village wine. Shows no sign of closing down following the bottling last March.
" Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-99
1997 $43.99 very limited
