Chateau d'Or et de Gueules Print E-mail

The Chateau d'Or et de Gueules is located adjacent to Grande Cassagne at the gateway to the Camargue, four kilometers from the village of St Gilles on the southern slopes of the Costieres de Nimes. The vineyard of the Ch?teau enjoys an ideal south-southeast exposure and a terroir of smooth pebbles which permit the soil to store heat during the day and release it to the vines at night. Here sunshine is exceptional and there is a good supply of water thanks to numerous phreatic layers. These two factors assure high quality grapes with good sugar. Winemaker Diane Puymorin produces wines of intensely fruity character and silky texture on her 30 hectare estate. Low yields and late harvesting accentuate the complexity of the old vines - Carignan (60 years), Grenache (35 years), Syrah (40 years) & Mourvedre (40 years).

"Proprietor Diane Puymorin fashions this super cuvee from 50% Syrah and the rest primarily Mourvedre, with a dollop of old vine Carignan included in the blend. One hundred percent tank-fermented and aged, it boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as great fruit on the attack, a luscious texture, medium body, loads of freshness, and copious quantities of sweet black and red fruits intermixed with licorice and earth. Drink this beauty over the next 2-3 years." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #147
1998 $11.99 available
"The 1998 Costieres de Nimes, a blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, and Carignan, is made in an earthy, mushroomy style, and is not as fruit-driven as some of importer Robert Kacher's other selections from this up and coming appellation. A deep ruby color is followed by a spicy, peppery, earthy nose, plenty of tannin, and a style not unlike a top class Bandol. While it may never resolve all its tannin and rusticity, there is plenty going on in this wine. Drink it over the next 4-5 years." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #136
