This small Chateau
is located near the town of Saint-Gilles, 15 miles from the Mediterranean Sea
and just west of the Rhone River overlooking la Camargues.
It is owned and operated by the Cornut family. Sylvia is the oenologist, with Francios and their two
sons tending to the vineyards. Francios is meticulous in his viticultural practices and a
true believer in sustainable agriculture, using no synthetic herbicides,
pesticides or fertilizers on any of his vineyards or crops. The rocky soil here is reminiscent of Chateauneuf-du-Pape,
and the fruit is always picked late, ensuring very deep, profound wines, with
amazingly soft tannins. They prune
heavily throughout the year to keep yields low, and leaf-pull to ensure true
physiological ripeness of the fruit. Typically starting days later than most of
their neighbors, they pick by taste, and when the stems, skins and seeds are
truly ripe.
Their wines are superb examples of great material and winemaking,
combining depth, power and balance.
"This
Costieres de Nimes superstar estate is well worth checking out... A large
property of 150 acres, planted primarily with Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault,
Chateau Guiot's 2002s are strikingly successful, better than most of its
neighboring appellations (Chateauneuf du Pape) declared wines. These are all terrific
values!" Robert Parker
Cabernet /Syrah Vin de Pays du Gard
The Syrah for this bottling is
specially selected from the best parcels of the vineyards, and the Cabernet is
picked really late ? sur maturit?,
to ensure good structure and wonderful texture.
A blend of 40% Cabernet and 60% Syrah, this wine is aged for up to one
year in barrel, and then bottled unfiltered. It
is dark ruby-violet in color, with juicy, jammy blue/black fruits with
raspberry, currants and violets on the nose.
Smooth and ripe in the mouth with dark berry, meat and smoke flavors -
there are no hard edges in this wine.

"A blend of 60% cabernet and 40% Syrah aged in a combination of new and
used oak casks. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by lovely scents of
black cherries, currants, tobacco leaf and licorice. Neither diluted, clipped,
attenuated or vegetal (as are most 2002s), it too should be drunk over the next
1-2 years." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #151

"A blend of Syrah (60%) and
Grenache (40%), exhibits a big, roasted plum, cherry, earth and pepper
scented bouquet as well as a ripe, fleshy personality. Well made with
surprising elegance, it carries its 13.5% alcohol easily." Robert
Parker, The Wine Advocate #153
"Fruity red, with lip smacking flavors of raspberry,
red cherry and spice. Good quaff. Try with barbeque. Drink now." The

"The 2002 Vin du Pays du Gard Grenache/Syrah (there will not be
a prestige cuvee in 2002) is a tank-fermented blend of 60% Syrah and 40%
Grenache. Revealing surprisingly good character for this difficult vintage, it
possesses a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a richly fruity bouquet
revealing scents of licorice, black cherries, and currants. The soft finish is
nicely textured. Drink it over the next 1-2 years." Robert Parker, The Wine
