Bertrand Ambroise

Ambroise.jpg

Bertrand Ambroise consistently produces top-flight wines that are typically well-structured and very deep in color, from 17 hectares of vines in Nuits-St-Georges, Vosne-Roman?e and Corton. These are not wines for the faint-hearted. The reds are neither fined nor filtered and are matured in barriques of which 75-100% are new. They are opaque in color and on the palate are full-bodied and intense with copious amounts of chewy black fruits. His Corton Charlemagne is enormously concentrated but needs time to show at its best.

"My friends that live for California Cabernets and the reds of Bordeaux consistently adore the wines of Bertrand Ambroise. These are not subtle, elegant, cherry and strawberry-filled wines, but rather, are dark, boisterous bruisers that make their presence felt through their power and intensity. Ambroise does not filter his whites and neither fines nor filters his reds. Both are left on their lees for a year and see 100% new oak." Robert Parker

Clos Vougeot
1998 $89.99 limited
"Succulent style, clean and fresh, with a lively midpalate that gains intensity. Medium-bodied, this chewy, dark-colored monster is packed to the rafters with toasted oak, tar, game, leather and crisp black and red berry notes. Tannic and explosive finish. Whoa! Best from 2005 through 2012." 91 The Wine Spectator 6/15/02
"Saturated deep ruby. Cooler, musky, rather cabernet-like aromas of cassis, black cherry, violet, mocha, dark chocolate and espresso. Very concentrated and dense but a bit monolithic today, with a medicinal black cherry flavor. Here, too, the acids seem lower, but the tannins are on the tough side. This was the ripest of his '98s, notes Ambroise." 88-92 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-00
1997 $89.99 very limited
"The medium to dark ruby-colored 1997 Clos Vougeot's nose is composed of over-ripe red fruit aromas. This fat, verging on flabby, hyper-dense, thick, and medium to full-bodied wine is not one to lay away in the cellar. Jellied cherries, blackberries, and cumin-like spices are found in this sur-maturite-laced, slightly warm offering. It is hedonism incarnate, opulent, sensual, and a wine that will require drinking in the short term. Projected maturity: now-2004." 90-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #125

Corton Rognets
2001 $91.99 very limited
2000
$86.99 limited
"Full medium ruby. Reduced, wild aromas of game and nutty oak. Fat and sweet in the mouth; a bit less muscular and more complex than usual for this cuvee at this stage. Not hugely dense or structured, and thus rather pliant and '97-like. Finishes with substantial chewy, ripe tannins. The yield here was just 28 hectoliters per hectare, according to Ambroise, and the wine has 14% natural alcohol and a low pH of 3.3." 89-91 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-02
1998 $79.99 limited
"Saturated ruby-purple, possibly the darkest wine I tasted in Burgundy in November. Superripe aromas of kirsch, black raspberry and violet; distinctly liqueur-like. Huge and dense, with almost confectionery sweetness. The wine's texture reminded me of cabernet yet it's vibrant and not at all monolithic or heavy. Powerful underlying structure. Finishes very long; the huge tannins are ripe and chewy. These vines were the most affected by rot in '98 and required the most severe triage, says Ambroise, who believes this wine will age for a very long time." 91-94 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-00
1997 $86.99 very limited
80 cases imported "A dark, verging on black-colored 1997 Corton Le Rognet reveals roasted, stone, earth, licorice, blackberry, and road tar aromas. Super-ripe, yet not over-ripe like the Clos Vougeot, it saturates the palate with its powerful, dark flavors. This massive Pinot Noir nectar is full-bodied, oily-textured, and possesses immensely sweet and ripe tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2010." 92-94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #125
1990 $149.99 very limited
"If you are young, have fine genes for longevity, and exercise seriously, you may want to splurge on a few bottles of Ambroise's 1990 Corton-Le Rognets. The color is black. After coaxing, the nose reveals scents of black-cherries, minerals, and truffles. In the mouth, the wine is nearly too extracted. There are gobs of fruit and considerable tannin. A minimum of 10 years of cellaring will be required for this full-bodied, massively constituted red burgundy to reach its apogee. For those readers who have refused to buy burgundy because it lacked richness, weight, and aging potential - here's your chance. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025." 94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #83
"A ferocious, grand red Burgundy, made in a modern, muscular, bold, rich and concentrated style. Inky black in color, extraordinarily deep in aromas, showing a mineral, wet earth and terroir character that fights its way through the tannic, powerful Cabernet-like structure. If you like your Pinots delicate, stay away. But you won't regret cellaring this balanced monster until 2010. It reminds me of a fine Roman?e Conti or La T?che, or perhaps Corton Rognet from Bertrand Ambroise." 97 The Wine Spectator 5/15/98

Nuits St Georges Argillieres
2000 $64.99 very limited
"Medium ruby. Blackberry, cranberry, bitter chocolate and black pepper on the nose, lifted by a floral element. Rich and oaky in the middle, with a mineral aspect. On the austere side today, but finishes with very good length. 87-90 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-02
1999 $62.99 very limited
"The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos Des Argillieres has a lively, floral, red berry-scented nose. New oak, tangy currants, blackberries, and fresh herbs can be found in its medium-bodied personality. This structured wine is flavorful, expressive, and harmonious. Drink it over the next 8 years." 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #135
"Ruby-red. Roasted, sappy red fruits, smoke and leather on the complex nose. Juicy, bright and spicy but tightly wound today, with very primary flavors of cassis and violet. Finishes firmly tannic and long. 90(+?) Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-01

2000
$54.99 very limited
1999 $53.99 very limited
"The prosciuto-scented 1999 Nuits-St.-Georges En Rue de Chaux is a dense, medium-bodied wine. Spice, flowers, blackberries, and tar can be found in its intense flavor profile. It is concentrated, well-balanced, and boisterous. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2010." 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #135
"Bright medium ruby. Sappy aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and violet, with a suggestion of dried fruits. Full and lively, with repeating black fruit flavors. Finishes with substantial, toothcoating, still-tight tannins that will require at least five or six years of patience. 90+ Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-01
1998 $51.99 very limited
1995 $45.99 very limited
175 cases made ?The dark, almost black, Nuits-St.-Georges Rue De Chaux reveals an austere, almost brooding nose of burnt wood and black fruits (similar to unsweetened licorice) and an austere, masculine, chewy, tannic, dark berry-filled mouth. Full-bodied and thick, this wine requires 5-7 years of cellaring before being enjoyed over the subsequent 7-9 years. This wine (not one for the faint-hearted) was aged in 100% new oak and is an intense, tannic, robust wine that demands a few years of cellaring before being consumed.? 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate #111

Nuits St Georges Vaucrains
2001 $69.99 very limited
2000
$64.99 very limited
"Medium ruby. Nuanced nose combines black fruits, violet, pepper and tarry, smoky oak. Sweeter, suppler and more delicate than the foregoing samples, but a wine of very good rather than outstanding density and complexity. The tannins are fine and hit the palate later. 88-90 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-02

1998 $35.99 limited
"Saturated ruby to the rim! Deeper-pitched aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, violet and chocolate; ripe verging on roasted. Fat, sweet and layered, with a chocolatey richness and unusual density for a village wine. But there no shortage of vinosity here. Finishes with substantial but fine tannins and strong fruit." Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 3/4-00
